Deaf Mute Woman Missing
Oh dear.
I couldn’t help but giggle at the NZPA article on this YahooXtra news page…
Emma Agnew, a deaf-mute woman from Christchurch has disappeared without a trace. Her car was found torched the night she disappeared. Her three brothers Benny, Toby and Herbie (I’m sorry, that’s funny in itself) have given a televised plea for her return and police fear for her safety. It’s a potentially tragic story really, so I feel kind of mean laughing about it. But when the NZPA said “The 20-year-old was last heard from at 10.30am on Thursday morning” I couldn’t control myself.
How does one “hear from” a deaf mute?

your awful, you awful man
Hahaha I wasn’t laughing at HER. I was laughing at the papers’ choice of words.
Oh come on, that is sooo funny! Maybe she had loud gestures?
There is also the part where her deaf brothers “spoke of their love”. I guess it’s kinda hard to be politically correct with that story
*insert politically incorrect joke here*
You’re such an idiot! I’m part of the deaf community and I know Emma and her family.
And I don’t agree with the use of the word “Deaf-mute”, that label is really offensive for us. Of course, Emma can scream or make noises, she ain’t dumb. Neither am I or other deaf people.
And also the deaf community are really tight, we’re like brothers and sisters. So we love one other as best friends.
Thanks for your feedback Kat.
My apologies if I’ve offended you by this post. As I pointed out in my subsequent comment this post was never meant to be directed at Emma – or in fact other deaf people. I used the term deaf-mute purely because she was referred to as that on another site. I was unaware until now that anyone could find that offensive. Merriam-Webster defines a mute as “a person who cannot or does not speak”, and that is the way in which I had intended this to be interpreted. I am always open to enlightenment, however.
I’ve been following the Agnew case in the media since then though. I actually wrote an email to one of the papers condemning their web article as I figure that if theres a (wo)manhunt on the least they could do is publish her photo. NONE of the web based articles did so, bar TV3.
So once again, my most humble apologies. You are teaching me about things which I am obviously ignorant, so for that I thank you!
I would also like to say that I deeply regret my thoughtless comment with regard to the story. At the time (when I read this) I did not realise that this was in fact a serious case happening right now in nz, I do not watch tv at all. I have since been following the case and it is very upsetting on all counts.
I would like to point out however that we were mocking the choice of phrases used, not the case itself.
yes repent your sins you awful bunch, you should have listened to me, shouldn’t you?
Hay! Whose side are you on anyways?
Actually, “Colonel Slink” you should be repenting because “Awful” is a label, and you sound like you’re being controlling.
No offence.
This is gonna be my last comment.
Bye bye.
Cough*uptight*cough*
I think my apology was wasted. I mean, golly gee… isn’t it amazing how the hard-done-by are quite oft so quick to cast stones?? “Don’t use labels, but I’ll label you”. Nice hypocrisy there.
Actually ‘Kat’ We are all good mates on this site, and Slink is a very kind and genuine considerate person. And the editor is NOT an idiot, he is a very gentle compassionate intelligent man.
If Slink is controlling, then whos being judgemental, hmm?
Theres no need for any verbal abuse to be hurled, apologies were given and heartfelt. You either accept them or you don’t. Your choice.
in the words of metallica: “you label me, i’ll label you, so i dub thee the unforgiven.”
Hear hear!! Well said, friends
Having checked the stats, none of the visitors that came here to read the Agnew story actually bothered to read beyond this one page… I wont even speculate as to what label we should then give them.
Also – the only person to come here via a search engine did so from page 13 of a Google search for Emma Agnew. 13 PAGES?!?! That defies all statistics and maybe I’m reading too much into it, but that makes it sound like they were LOOKING for a fight. Maybe that’s why there was no acknowledgment of the apology?
Also the latest news on nz.yahoo.com says that someone has been charged with her murder. This after an as yet unidentified female body was found in Christchurch. Assuming the worst, I’d just like to offer our deepest sympathies at this tragic time to her family and friends from all here at TGM.
Kat eh, wonder if thats my ex……….
Is yer ex deaf?
Is yer ex a beach?
yeah think she was, never listened to what I had to say, and that definitely makes her a beach.
Maybe she couldn’t hear you?
Through the beard? Or through the murky haze in your room?
Okay, sorry if I offended you with the comment I wrote before.
Emma was found dead a couple of days ago and a man was arrested for murder and went to court today.
Thats all I’m gonna say for now.
Goodbye.
you said last time would be your final comment. I say your a faceless coward, bring it to the slaugter if you dare!
Please ignore the drunken Bogan. That’s not a label, it’s fact.
And yes we know that Emma was found dead and I think I speak on behalf of all of us in saying that I feel it is a tragic and needless loss of an innocent life. I saw her two school friends talking about her on the TVNZ website today and was astounded by how highly they thought of her. She must have been a really neat person.
and I can fully understand your original outburst. I can only imagine what it is that those of you closest to her are going through right now.
ROFL
most intelligent thing you said all day Laz
What teh phuck happened there!????
I think they call that a mute moment…
lmfao maybe i do belong in the “selective hearing” category!
