April Fools Wrap Up

Being a bit of a funny bastard, I always look forward to April 1st, and it seems that now we’re in the era of Social Media, everyone from Google to Mogul to Starbucks is getting in on the act.  Here’s a small selection of April Fools pranks that fancied my tickle this year.

Google Rebrands

After Topeka, Kansas changed it’s name to Google for the month of March 2010, Google honoured this move by rebranding to Topeka.  That’s it… no more Google.  And get used to cool names like tMail, and Vireka (previously Virgle – the joint mission between Virgin and Google to populate Mars which was announced on April 1st 2008). Starbucks Upsizes and Downsizes All At Once

Starbucks unveiled their two new sizes, the Plenta and the Micra.  Personally, the Micra actually looks like the kind of sized coffee I enjoy – a SUPER short black.  Dunno if I’d do it with a straw, but then again a decent SUPER short black rolls out like tar and wouldn’t go up a straw anyways… Read More

Think Geek Defies iPad Invasion

I always look forward to Think Geek’s April Fools newsletters.  It’s kind of the highlight of April 1st every year for me.  Some of the best “gadgets” I’ve seen so far include the wireless power supply for computers (yay! no more cables!) and a fun GPS Laser Tag game which involves downloading Air Traffic Control data to the tagging device, then rushing outside as the planes pass over and firing the green laser at the planes.  When they hit the planes you score points, upload the data back to the tagging website and watch yourself rise up the laser tag leaderboard.  Classic silliness.

This year there’s a Monolith “action” figure from the movie 2010, an iCade dock for your brand spanking new iPad which turns it into a retro arcade machine (thus actually making it useful) and canned Unicorn meat (it’s okay, they die of natural causes).  They are also running a competition which defies the current trend of giving away iPads by giving away an original H1000 Apple Newton MessagePad (from 1993) Read the newsletter

Mogul Outlines New Business Strategy

My boss is a bit of a funny bastard when he wants to be, so he announced our new business strategy on local comms hub, Fruitbowl. Apparently we’re ditching web development for “’slash-and-burn’ farming, nightclub security, and street preaching”.  Nightclub security? Okay so now I know they actually hired me for my size rather than my dev talents. Read more

TGM Announces Closure

And of course who can forget my own wee bit of humour.  Apparently I didn’t fool many people at all with the announcement of the impending closure of TGM yesterday.  Oh well, I’d like to think I gave you at least 1.5 seconds of breath-holding surprise!

Oh and a late comer but still ABSOLUTELY hilarious (in my opinion!!) is QUALCOMM – who evidently borrowed technology from butterflies with disasterous consequences.
