Google Maps gets AWESOME!
I LOVE Google products.
There. I said it. I’ve recently become a convert to Google Mail (or gmail). I’ve had a gmail account since it was in beta, but I recently discovered my webhost (our webhost in fact) does mail hosting with GMAIL!! YUS! That’s up to 200 email addresses of around 7GB each. That makes 1.4 TERRA BYTES of mail storage. That’s bigger than my TOTAL website hosting (which hosts around 10 other sites by the way).
Anyhoo… I’ve always SORT OF fancied Google Maps and seeing as how trademe has shut down smaps and gone to Google Maps, I figure it’s really my best option for finding the B to my A. You can even ask it for directions from said A to B and it says helfpul things like “Go 64km. Turn left on SH2. Go 163km.” (As a complete aside, you have to watch out when it suddenly cuts to metres instead of kilometres. Made for an interesting trip to auckland when I mistook “Drive 63m” for “Drive 63km”). Today I visited Google Maps and I found a link that said “Street view”. COOLEST tool in the WORLD. EVER. End of story. Apparently it’s only JUST been launched in NZ (like TODAY!), but it allows a visitor to jump into a 3D virtual trip down your street in photos as taken by the lovely folks at Google during a tiki-tour through all of New Zealand recently. IT’S ASTOUNDING!!!
The FUNNIEST thing is that someone told me recently they moved into a new flat and that their partner didn’t move in with them until later. I’m not sure why that person thought I’d ever believe that story or even why they had to lie to me in the first place… but guess what? They got TOTALLY snapped. I found an article on NZ Heralds website pointing out that Google Maps “Site view” was launched TODAY and that the images were six to twelve months old. The story teller moved into the new house midyear this year. And guess what? The pic of their house quite clearly shows 2 vehicles sitting outside their place. And both of them belong to their partner. If NZ Herald is to be believed, this pre-dates the person moving into the so-called empty house.
SNAPPED!
Here’s a link to our drill hall @ ATC for you all to have a gander at… you can click the arrows to move up and down the road. It’s SOOOOOOO cool.

I’ve been a google fan for ages … ever since my husband got me to try gmail and I realized the brilliance of labels instead of folders. I’ll never go back!
We now use google documents for files that we share and want access to all the time, all my blogs are through google’s RSS reader, and this past weekend my husband helped my sister move apartments and we used street view to see what her new place looked like, so not only did he know where it was, but also what color the front door is. It’s brilliant!
tell that to the liar
Great to have you about again M, and I’ve just noticed you have about 5 new posts!!!!! I’m gonna have to put some time aside to read em all!
I love the street view too but they haven’t done London yet
So I’ve had to spy on all my friends in NZ instead
