More Google Propoganda

The weekend. Again. Infact it’s almost half finished. Or is that – more optimistically – half started?  And what have I achieved?  I’ve successfully converted my family to Google Apps for one.

Google Apps

Mum was having trouble with her web host – unfortunately a company I’d recommended to her a couple of years back.  Jack’s email was getting horrible amounts of spam.  The email account had been active for about 6 or 7 years and the spam was so bad that when he deleted an entire page of spam from his webmail interface (30 messages per page), two more arrived in their place.  It was literally coming in every couple of minutes. So I registered their domain with Google Apps.  I did this about  a week ago, but I’ve only just finished.  And guess how much spam Jack has in his inbox right now even though he’s yet to even take a look at it?  That’s right… NONE.  Even his spam folder only has 36 messages in it.  I even managed to get a digital version of Mum’s birthday calendar online!

I used to be a stubborn bastard about things like email and building websites.  I wanted to do it all myself just to prove that I’m a “real” Geek (a.k.a. doing it the hard way).  But why bother when Google can handle ALL of my mail needs in a far more superior (and might I add free) way and WordPress is winning awards for it’s CMS?

Reading

I got up reasonably early this morning (as I normally do on Saturdays anyways) to finish up my book – Stark by Ben Elton. (I’ll post a review soon.)  I had about 30 pages to go, which was amusing considering it was supposed to be my “filler” book ’til I got into Lord of the Rings at Christmas time…  So I finished it, ditched it and picked up Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.  Yes.  That Twilight by that Stephenie Meyer.

Yeah… I know, I know… I’m the original Mr. “Twilight?  I don’t understand the fascination.  Maybe it’s a girl thing.”  I thought it was hilarious when my mate Rob joined the group “You’re not a vampire, you’re a sparkly faggot in a tree” (which I’ve just discovered has been renamed “sparkly douchebag in a tree”) on Facebook.  I’ve pretty much frowned on the whole Twilight phenomenon so far.  But I’m hooked.  Not in a total Team Jacob/Team Edward kind of way, but in a “I just picked up that book and read a quarter of it in one sitting” kind of way – which is odd for me because it normally takes me months to read the lightest of paperbacks.  It’s a good and – so far – easy read.  It’s not super thrilling, edge of my seat kind of stuff, but for some inconceivable reason I find I just can’t put it down.

I’m beginning to wonder if Meyer put some illicit, addiction inducing subliminal messages in the print.

Just for the record, the paperback is currently selling for $NZ17.97 and the two disc Special Edition DVD is only $NZ19.99 – both over at our friends, Fishpond. Perfect for the Twihard in your life for Christmas!!

Scanning

I’m sure I had something more important to say, but I figure I’ll just point out that I’ve just spent most of my evening scanning 39 pages of CHB Aeroclub history and OCRing it.  Fun.  The things we do for our family, huh?  On that note I’m totally shagged and ready for sleep.  Maybe after another chapter of angsty teen romance.  I’m so disappointed with myself.

At least I can pre-man by watching a bit of Top Gear.
