2030 hours: Start watching Bourne Identity. Not the first time I’ve given it a go, definitely a good movie
2105 hours: Kirsty gets home with the shopping. Watching mildly interrupted
2150 hours: Go to bed, flick the telly on
2250 hours: Having struggled through the last ten minutes, I catch the credits then crash.
2325 hours: WANG! Horrendous bang and jolt practically throws me out of bed and I’m out around the bed and half way to the bedroom door before I’m even awake.
With the house feeling like it’s positioned on the same jelly that my hands now appear to be made of, we make our way to the kids rooms and find a VERY wide eyed Connor (or “Donnor” as he likes to call himself), and Taylah who is mumbling something about a dream of driving in a van that I wouldn’t let her out of!
Wow! What an experience. Due to this quake (yes it was an earthquake incase you missed the translation!) being VERY shallow and VERY close (10km out of Hastings and 30km deep – more stats here), it had to be one of the most intense I’ve ever experienced!!! Just AWESOME!!! Scary as hell at the time, but what a rush. I swear it took me at least 3 and half minutes to get back to sleep afterwards! The bit that really threw me though was the noise. The bang was something I had not ever experienced in a quake before. Turns out it was the copious amounts of stuff that I found littered on the floor this morning. Robodog, Robocan (no relation), anything tall and cylindrical – like my shaving foam, our salt and pepper shakers and a big tall (and skinny) glass bottle that Kirsty has filled with blue bath crystals. Somehow that survived the fall in the bathroom from a 5 foot high window onto wooden floors, although I suspect it bounced off the loo first. Quite exciting though, I’ve never seen anything more than a shaky suspended ceiling light in a quake.
Any of joo others feel it at all??
Oh and btw.. congrats to Big Bro Nath who graduated from Police college last week! Bloody awesome work! Hanging out for my first ticket now

It was big you say? I didn’t feel a thing. I didn’t even know about it happening till you mentioned it.
Yeah I was real surprised at the lack of news coverage considering the size of it. 5.9 “isn’t that big” apparently – although if it were 6.0+ then it would be all over the news.
when I was reading it I was surprised at the size of it and as you say the lack of coverage. 5.9 isnt exactly small.
Ya certainly didn’t feel freakin small (as you can tell by my description!!)
Well yeah if it woke connor-nonnor up, it takes a big bang for kids to wake up in the night.
Yeah that’s for sure. She was DEFINITELY big by me. And Duffy & Finn’s reported around $10,000 worth damage (see the video on 3news.co.nz website)
