The Bike Trailer & HB Show Day

Been meaning to blog for ages but been so busy redeveloping that I’ve not had a chance to go all personal on ya.

The Bike Trailer

So recently the mighty ‘rolla pretty much gave up the ghost.  It’s not that it’ll never go again, it’s just that it’s gonna cost about $700 to get it warrantable and another $1k to keep it really going… and frankly I can’t justify that on a 20 year old car!!

So I’m thinking… take up biking to work.  Only probo with this is that I am currently taking Connor to work with me.  Kirsty opens her under 2 childcare center at the same time as the over 2 center that Connor goes to opens, so the timing is kind of an issue.  And our budget doesn’t stretch to a new car just now.  So what to do???  GET A TRAILER!

This one cost us about $180 from KMart (much cheaper than a car!)  Picked it up Friday a week ago and put it together in minutes.  We pulled out onto the road and gave it the compulsory test drive.  Connor sat in the back and called out “FASTER DAD!” as we rounded the traffic island at the end of our street.  I put the hammer down and speed up to around 20km/h (best guess from having a speedo on my bike for a while) and he squealed with delight all the way down the road!

We’ ve been using it for a week now and we both still LOVE it (in spite of the puncture on Wednesday!)  So far it’s only cost me little more than a tank of gas to get my bike “trailer ready”.  $65 for road tires (fitted for that price too), $25 for a new bike lock and $17.50 for a puncture repair (the timing meant I didn’t have time to do it my relf).  Not bad really!

Hawke’s Bay A&P Show

Blessed we are with the best long weekend in the country… HB Anniversary day falls on the Friday before Labour Day, so we get a four day weekend every year.  WIN!  Part of the HB anniversary day delight is the HB Show.  Every year it seems to be fairly similar – nothing hugely new to see and do, and this year was a bit of a ho-hum sort of affair too – partly due to the FREEZING wind, and partly due to there being SOOOOO many people it was hard to get around with a pushchair.

One of the things we do tend to forget though is the fact that the kids LOVE the show.  See the bottom of today’s gallery for some piccies of our little man having the most exciting day!

and yeah… I know… we have to clean the camera lens!!

Loving the photos! Good on you for getting a bike trailer, definitely the cheaper option and so much better for the environment :)
