Welcome to 2010

Hi folks and welcome to a new year, and indeed a new decade!

I’m back at work as of today, and it’s really weird!  3 weeks off is a really long time and it takes a bit to get back into the swing of things… particularly getting on the bike for the first time in 3 weeks.  It’s astounding how quickly you can lose form.

As per usual I had a whole bunch of random thoughts on my way… mostly though I took note of the number of people driving.  I see hardly ANYONE in my age range riding bikes or walking.  The silliest bit about that is that it’s only 3.5km from home to work, so it’s not like it’s hard or anything.  So then I really take a close look at the number of people in each car.  I swear 19 out of every 20 cars has ONE person in it.  Just one. Now, I know that for each of those 20 cars there are probably 4 or 5 that are sales reps, account managers, contractors or other such workers that need their vehicle to travel during the day.  But the rest?  HELLO?  You’re all going in the same direction at the same time.  Have people here not heard of car pooling?

Imagine four people can actually get together and share resources.  In this day and age I’d be HUGELY interested in finding some way to quarter my weekly fuel bill (moot point of course because I ride, but you get my point, right?)  Or *GASP* you could dust off the old Raleigh 10 speed, buy yourself a pair of sneakers and a bike lock and BAM!  No fuel bill at all.  All the while you’re saving the environment too – heaven forbid you didn’t do your bit for climate change (whatever that is anyway).

It’s just such a sad state of affairs that we all live so separately that we can’t talk to the people in our community and organise car pooling, or that we’ve become so lazy (or worried about appearances maybe?) that we can no longer jump on a bike.
