Winter much?
With Duck Shooting Season open it means it’s officially winter… but to be honest it’s only just starting to hit now.
Our weekend out on the farm was pretty mild really – it bucketed down on Saturday afternoon and then again on Saturday night, but beyond that it was pretty fine the whole trip. I guess the wind was a little on the chilly side on Sunday but nothing like Opening ’09. I don’t think I put a thermal top on at all this year.
As for the actual shooting? Well… I only got about 5 goes at ducks on Saturday and missed every bloody one. I was beginning to wonder if it was the gun – a 12ga Benelli pump – the first time I’d used it. An impressive looking piece of machinery – very SWAT with it’s synthetic stock, but I couldn’t hit the backside of a barn with it. Saturday night I had some success… I was out at the Maimai alone and shot a Tui with it – but it’s okay… I drank it first.
Sunday was not much chop with virtually no-one shooting a bird at all. Leights got about 4 but I was one of only two folks who hadn’t gotten on the scoreboard. Brad – one of the farmers’ sons – popped up to the house just as I was about to try out Jack’s new 20ga pump and announced there were two ducks on the neighbours pond. Against all odds I bagged both of them – left and right. Instantly in love with that gun. Jack even offered to sell it to me, but a.) it’s right handed and b.) it’s $2000 worth. Hmmmmm. Anyhoo… useless town-dog Kahn didn’t retrieve so I had to rely on Jack’s dog to bail us out. Bit of training to do there me thinks.
So winter… got our first frost Monday. Not a major, but plenty of white stuff to go round. No more frosts this week but I’ve upgraded shorts and t-shirt on the bike to jeans, thermal top, polar fleece jumper and most importantly GLOVES! I’ve also been issued with the team Ugg boots at work!

Oh… as a postscript – for those that are interested – it’s officially 6 days til due date!!! Wow… where did that nine months go!?

I found out over the weekend that I’m going to be an aunt again
My sis is due on 22nd November so I know for a fact that I will be in Cairns before then, otherwise my sister will never forgive me for missing the birth.
