Democracy Rules… ish.

With the new upgrade I’m thinking about tweaking the site a wee bit.  As always the rule of “I pay the bills here so I make the final decision” stands, but I’m open to suggestion.

I’ve looked back over old posts in the last couple of weeks and discovered that a couple of years back we had FORTY posts in one month!  Now we’re lucky to get 1.  So I want to know why that is?  What’s taken the edge off the site?  Are you guys just not that into it anymore?  Has Facebook stolen our thunder?  Are we all just THAT busy?  Is the site missing something?

This is your opportunity to have your say!

Thus far I’m thinking about the following:

  • Tidying up the front page so we see snippets of posts, not whole posts and present them in an entertaining manner (think interactive sliders)
  • Utilising the post thumbnails from WordPress 2.9+
  • Tidying up the archives so it’s easy to skip back to older months (like the old site)
  • Adding a bit more “non-post” content for me – coz it’s my site so :Þ

But I’m open to suggestion!  So throw your ideas at me.  Authors… what do you want the site to do?  Readers, what do you want to see?

Ditched Intense Debate

By Mr_Moon
09:24 - April 3, 2010

As cool as it was I’ve decided to ditch Intense Debate on TGM.  It seems a bit odd that the people who are my site have to log in to a whole other system to keep track of their comments.  Probably cool on a bigger/more connected site, but waste of space here.  So now you only have to log in to THIS site to leave a comment.

Happy blogging/commenting :D

Go Home

By Mr_Moon
12:53 - December 17, 2009

One of the things that’s always bugged me about tgmv3 is not being able to go back to the homepage.  So I’ve fixed that – just click on the logo (it’s a design standard anyways).

Also:

  • fixed italic text so it’s actually italicised
  • added styling for blockquotes (see my last post for an example of this)

Still more to do, but only so much you can cram into a lunch break!!

ITS ALIVE!!

By Mr_Moon
17:05 - October 25, 2009

I think Kirsty is about ready to kill me for spending so long on the computer this weekend, but I’ve FINALLY finished (bar bug shooting of course). The site is WordPressed and themed with a theme I’m calling TGM v3.0.

In the interests of being all “Open Source” and all that I’m thinking bout releasing the theme for public use, if anyone is interested.

So anyways… so far as the feeds go, they are in the User Panel at right. You can subscribe via email to the entries (posts) and comments.  AWESOME!

Anyways… sick of sitting in front of my computer.  Feedback appreciated though!

Google Chrome

By Mr_Moon
23:31 - September 5, 2008

Hi folks!

This is not really site news so much as personal tech news (but that tends to end up in the site news anyways). This (to the best of my knowledge) is the first visit and first post to TGM from the new Google Chrome browser. Yes Google has entered the Browser wars!!

Unfortunately according to the friendly chaps and chapesses at StatCounter.com (who host our site stats), Google are stealing market share from Firefox, Safari and “other” browsers (like my trusty Opera) and more people are in fact using IE which seems odd to me. If you’re like me – the amateur statistician – and interested, you can read more here

Can you say “overkill of outgoing links for such a short post”. I encourage you all to give Chrome a bash. I’m loving it so far. And anything with a [Java] engine called V8 has to be good by me!

Welcome Baldrick

By Mr_Moon
09:38 - September 3, 2008

Welcome to our latest member, Baldrick. I’ve known Baldrick now for a couple of years and he’s an old (as in known for a long time, not as in aged – although now you mention it… shut up Bren) and dear friend of Kirsty’s. He was (until his fairly recent resignation) a fellow NZ Cadet Force’s Officer and outranked both of us put together.

An all around (not all round) nice guy and a great sounding board for my techy problems, please make the Man with the Mo’ feel welcome!!

Stats Jan 2008

By Mr_Moon
14:37 - February 4, 2008

And here we have it…

Drum roll please…

Stats for Jan 2008: 2989 hits.

Down on December’s 4854 and waaaay down on Nov 2007s 6630. Interesting to note that ALL the numbers have two digits the same in them though. Yes I’m motivated by numbers and patterns ;) Always was a maths geek.

I think low number is due to us all doin the holiday thing for week(s) at a time during Jan though, so hopefully Feb picks up. Thus far we have 244 hits – well below the average required to get over the 6K mark again. Time to revisit those traffic boosting plans methinks!

Another milestone passed this morning though… we crossed the threshold of another 10,000 hits, pushing us up past 30,000!! Rock on to 100,000 folks! YAY!

Things ticking over

By Mr_Moon
16:22 - December 10, 2007

Greetings!

Figured I’d post some techo news, not because I have much to say, just because it wouldn’t be right not to.

Prometheus is back and badder than ever!! YUS! The weirdest thing is that they replaced the hard drive so completely removed all of my data, but my fingerprints were still in the readers database. NICE! I can only assume the fingerprint reader must have it’s own built in memory.

As a precaution I splashed out $60 and got myself an external HDD enclosure. I’ve got a couple of surplus-to-requirement SATA drives floating around, so 80GB of backup storage has now gone in the enclosure. Never again will I be brought to a grinding halt by destroyed data! Daily backups will be scheduled as soon as I can figure out the backup scheduler thingee in Vista. Not that I’ve looked yet… I’ve just been busy trying to archive all my stuff off my work computer before I leave next week!

Just had a renewal notice for 2x domain names – one for another client – which means that in 60 days I will have been selling hosting for 12 months already. Wikkid. Roll on repeat business!

Anyways… journal-journal coming soon for more personal stuff and things!

Stats update

By Mr_Moon
10:33 - December 2, 2007

Well!! What a month it was. We had a couple of major goings on that were first for us.

Somehow during the whole site-ticking-over-like-a-whilrwind thing, I didn’t notice that it clicked over 20,000 hits. Took me 3 years to hit 10,000 then WE’VE done another 10,000 in the space of only a few months, which is mad crazy awesome.

Next, we caused a stir. NICE! With our piss take at the journalism surrounding the Emma Agnew thing, we managed to upset members of the deaf community who knew Emma. Somehow, as much as it displeased me to upset someone, I did get a perverse kick out of being controversial.

We managed to hit a new record hits in one day… 723 hits on Wednesday! The previous high since getting new authors on was 426, and the high with only me as the author was 381. NICE!!

But the one you’ve all been waiting for (drum roll please) *BADADADADADADADADADA*… In October we set a record of 2566 hits. Last month (Nov 2007) we did MORE than double that with… *CYMBALCRASH* 6,630!!

So cheers to everyone involved!!

Just remember, the more shameless self promotion we do, the more that’s going to increase. I joke about 10,000 site hits everyday, but wouldn’t it be just amazing to get 10,000 in one month… SOOOOOOO CLOSE!

Cheers everyone!!
